NEIL Mitchell says he couldn't be happier with his new-look Stourbridge squad ahead of Saturday's campaign curtain-raiser.

The director of rugby at Stourton Park has had a busy summer revamping his playing staff following last season's disappointment but is pleased with those that have arrived.

Stourbridge ended their preparations with a victory over Hartpury last Saturday.

Mitchell said: "We are now ready after what has been a very busy summer for the club both on and off the field.

"I now have 29 or 30 players that I am very happy with and know a lot about.

"The victory against Hartpury was very impressive. The defence was exceptional, especially from a side that has not been together. It all bodes well for the season ahead.

"We only have three players in the squad that played against Harrogate at the end of last season. That in itself shows the amount of changes we have made here.

"I have had to be more hands-on this summer and have worked closely with (coach) Jon Higgins to hand pick the players we wanted.

"Importantly, I think we have been able to bring in players I already know a lot about. They all have the right attitude and the team spirit has also been fantastic."

Stour begin the new season by welcoming potential title challengers Macclesfield to Stourton Park this weekend.

"Our big challenge will be continuity and giving the players time to gel," added Mitchell. "Fitness and conditioning wise we are in a very good place but it may take a while for them to develop.

"Macclesfield is a tough start for us but I think our play during pre-season has already shown that we have no reason to fear anyone."

Hooker Sam Wilkes is set to miss Saturday's opener through injury.

However, Billy Harding, who was on trial at Bedford during the summer, is the latest new arrival and could come in to fill the gap.
