A CHARITY director from Halesowen has been featured an interactive online exhibition to mark Black History Month throughout October.

Hugh Sherriffe, Barnardo’s Midlands and South West director, is based in Halesowen and has been supporting the charity for more than 25 years.

Many of Barnardo’s first Black and dual heritage children went on to work in domestic service, while several contemporary children became renowned writers, athletes and civil servants.

Successful Barnardo’s Black children include celebrated fashion designer Bruce Oldfield OBE and former decathlete Snowy Brooks.

Mr Sherriffe said: “The Black community is an integral part of our organisation. Every child and family we work with, as well as our staff, volunteers and foster parents, have helped us to become the diverse organisation we are today.

“Black History Month is an opportunity for Barnardo’s to celebrate the achievements and invaluable contributions of the diverse communities across the UK.”

Mr Sherriffe began working for Barnardo’s in 1989. He was born in Britain but both of his parents are from Jamaica.

He said: “I joined Barnardo’s because I wanted to make a difference. My background gives me an understanding of injustice, a shared understanding of the issues that affect Barnardo’s service users, a celebration of difference, and a steely determination to root out oppressive practices.

“It’s important to have diversity in the workplace as it brings a kaleidoscope of skills and ideas. That ultimately means better services for children and families.

He added: “My most memorable moment in Black history was when Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in the 70’s. He was the first Black man to do so, at a time when he was being banned from many tennis clubs just because of the colour of his skin.

“There are many great Black people who’ve contributed to British society. One of my role models is Mary Seacole, who during the Crimean War offered to go and help nurse soldiers. She was rejected because of her skin colour but she saved up her own money and went over anyway. She’s a great example of determination and the greater good."
